Just finished the tree up for the most part last night. Yes, it's true. I slack on most everything. (notice not one wrapped gift under the tree...)

My goal was to switch up the decorations while spending the least amount of moolah possible. I think in all this year I spent less than $20. Hey ohhhh!

2 books = $2
2 foam wreaths = $2
scalloped scissors = $3
brown ribbon = $4
hot glue sticks = $4
brown paint = $1

The rest of the "stuff" I had around the house.

I am all about the garland this year. Tara, over at the Scoutie Girl blog, really got my head spinning with this tutorial. (for the record, I made the bakers twine and craft paper garland too. for the bedroom. sheesh. ending anything in "for the bedroom" makes it sound scandalous. oowee.) I took that tutorial and just used book pages and hemp twine to keep in the "paper" theme that the wreaths started. Even with the ornaments and the garland the tree was still lacking, so I made little paper "puffs" (for lack of a better term.) using the same technique as the wreaths. I would of made more, but I ran out of book pages. And patience.

heavy duty.

Today it's absolutely gross outside. No rain. Just a thick heavy fog. The field next to us looks like something straight out of a horror film. Not cool. At all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wsH9t1Z2B4E/SyaNG9PaUMI/AAAAAAAAAQk/s-yxUtUxeWM/s400/IMG_2595.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5415170752617533634" />

But you wanna know what is cool? (The best transition sentence I could muster. Sorry.) I'll tell ya. Lanie Beth's hubby, Brad, came over and helped the mister hang a beastly wall hanging yesterday. There was no chance of just the two of us hanging it so we brought in the big guns. This thing is heavy. It made a small dent in the wall where it was leaning while in storage. But, after they did their thing, it's hung up nice and neat. (and securely.)

I love how it looks but now I need more "old". Like a fantastic vintage chair. And a bookcase filled with old books.

The picture of the whole thing was hard to take 1.- because it's been foggy out and 2. - I had to actually take it from the front porch because the room is so skinny. So, sorry yet again, for the below mediocre photos. But, I figure posting something is better then just explaining it with words.

Oh! I also made my second wreath and it is resting peacefully in it's spot next to the fireplace. So, you may not be a "homemaker" in the traditional sense. And your friends probably aren't either. But, I feel like no matter if you live in a house, a condo, a loft, an apartment, or wherever, if you love making your dwelling space lovely then you are a homemaker. Home is where the heart is right? And these gifts would make most hearts happy.

1. tiered glass patters. - pier 1 imports - $8.95 to $12.95
2. flowers in a can. - fred flare - $11.00
3. lilak collection : flower clock. - supermarket - $25.00
4. canvas bordeaux buckets. - farmhouse wares - $16.00 to $24.00
5. laboratory flower vases. - urban outfitters- $14.00
6. you are... fill in the blank tiny text bowl. - palomasnest - $22.00
7. our house. - dazeychic - $20.00
8. Now, whether or not this one is "good" is up to you I suppose. Everything is under $25. (I'm trying to put my best foot forward.)

Here is my first installment. We so willing adopted some chickens from some friends who were moving into the city, with no land for them to live on. And by adopt, I mean, they gave us three chickens, a chicken coop, a 50 lb. bag of feed, a bag of cedar chips, a bucket to move the bedding, and last but not least, a watering bowl. With everything we needed to have them provided, it was a breeze talking the mister into the idea of keeping them.

Of course they needed to be named.

- Pippi - named after Pippi Longstocking, ya know, the one who's comin' into your world, a freckled faced red haired girl, you ought to know, she'll throw your life into her world. (Oh how I love theme songs. Here. You should listen to it.) Pippi makes me think of my younger years, I even dressed up as her for Halloween a few times. Needles to say, with the chickens being a red color, this name was a no brainer.

- Slowby - one of the chickens does things a bit different then the other two. She lays her eggs at a different time, wanders off by herself, and is usually the last to the coop at sunset. She's just a bit slower than the others. So "Slowby" she is.

- Gale - and then there's Gale. We named her Gale, because seriously, isn't Gale just a chicken name? Not Gail, that's just not it. Gale. That's the one. (We also think Gale Beggy is hilarious. Ok baybee.)

The coop is super cool. It has handles on both ends. We pick it up and move it every three days or so. This way the chickens are "semi" free range. They nest in the top at night, then eat and do chicken stuff on the ground during the day. On both ends of the coop are handy dandy mini doors where we can reach in and grab the eggs without taking the whole side off. Clever. The side does come off so you can clean out the bedding and such. (I was worried about how bad they would smell, but since they are moved from place to place, and I try to clean out the bedding regularly, it hasn't been a problem at all. But, then again we aren't experiencing the 100 degree summer days yet. Let's keep our fingers crossed.)

About two hours before sunset we let them out of the coop and they peck around, staying pretty close to their crib. As soon as the sun starts to go down the head right back to the roost. It's magical. At night we go and pull then hook the wire to pull up the ramp to the roost. That way they are safe and cozy, even if a raccoon does dig under the chicken wire on the bottom. Jokes on you Mr. Predator.

They have been low maintenance so far which was surprising to me. It kinda gives me a different sense of purpose. It's weird. And let me just tell you, I feel a bit more like a country gal now. I mean, we do have two acres. Maybe goats are next...

wrestling with wreaths.

Ok, so not literally wrestling with wreaths. (Although, I am quite sure many people would probably pay money to see Martha Stewart throw a suplex on a festive wreath.)

I've just been wanting to change up the wreaths that hang on each side of the fireplace for Christmas this year. And so, I attempted to make a paper wreath. By golly, I think I dig it.

click on the image for the tutorial.

I found the tutorial via Google. Gotta love ol' Google man. The Living with Lindsay tutorial popped up. I read it, decided that I could possibly actually do it, then went out and got the supplies. I think that I will make two larger ones for the fireplace, and put this one elsewhere. Who knows?

really ravishing.

So, this morning I woke up to a pretty fantastic voice mail. Two of them actually. Why? Because I recently posted this necklace in my shop.

And low and behold I got a convo from Triff asking me for my phone number. My favorite part of theconvo is that the subject line was "I'm an older British woman". I love it. She is from Sherborne, Dorset and most certainly fits the bill.(fyi - the second audio clip is loud.)

Seriously, I think it's super cool my little item description made it all the way over the big pond to a shop browser who obliged to humoring me. Triff, you are really ravishing. It's true. Thank you.

(for all the Etsy shoppers/sellers who read this, I would love it if you shot Triff a convo giving her a round of applause for her awesomeness. Here is her profile. (the usual.)
Mood: indifferent.

--

-Stepped out of bed.: 10ish. i went to bed feeling really yucky. but the sleep helped. a lot.
-Breakfast/Lunch: good ole waffles win again.
-Motivated act: none. whatsoever. at all.
-Got out of the house by: heading to atlantic station. we brought our friend molly along with us. we were giggly. and i liked it. we hit up the H&M, i found nothing. molly found three t-shirts, and joel got a trendy cardigan.(we are trying to be hipsters.)(we also ran into the taylor's there. three mondays in a row we have seen them. and i have not one complaint about it.) i (ok...joel) finally made a purchase at old navy. i found a fun little ruffly cardigan in a light light gray. i like it. in person it seems very jcrew.

although, i do like the <a href="http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/sweaters/merino/PRDOVR~20379/20379.jsp"target="_blank">jcrew chiffon ruffle cardigan ($88.00) better...

and, while i'm on the topic of old navy/jcrew cardigan comparisions, here is another:

the difference here is the old navy cardigan has a satin trim along the edges and the <a href="http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/sweaters/woolblends/PRDOVR~17829/17829.jsp"target="_blank">jcrew cardigan has the "peek-a-boo" sequin trim. again the jcrew is quite a bit more fabulous. but to save that much money, i could deal.

-Dinner: chick-fil-a. i got a chicken sandwich with bacon and cheese. man oh man, i'm loving some bacon right now. it's kinda weird.
-Ended the day by: watching the the hulk. i figured joel was sick of all the romantic comedies we've been watching lately. we needed some action in the netflix line up. it did indeed supply the action we needed. although joel did get a bit angry because i kept yelling "huuulllkkk! annnnngrryyy!" in my best hulk man voice almost every time he morphed. therefore my favorite part of the movie was when the hulk really did yell "huuulkkk smmmasssshhh". oh. and all the mushy love parts.

yesterday.

Event: monday funday.
Mood: dread (see motivated act.) & excitement (see dinner.)

--

-Stepped out of bed.: after 10 am. yup. true true.
-Breakfast/Lunch: pizza. i'm just seeming classier and classier huh?
-Motivated act: cleaned. cleaned. cleaned. oh, with a side of cleaned. {i'm talking, washing light fixtures, wiping down walls, having sore knees from scrubbing the floor, your hands smell like bleach, type of cleaning.}
-Got out of the house by: walking outside to do a load of laundry. (the laundry room is off of the carport.) stayed home the whole day. the mister, on the other hand, went a did some grocery shopping for us.
-Dinner: had the taylor's over as repayment for their kindness last monday. we had tacos, keeping in line with the mexican theme. they brought some YUMMY YUMMY homemade salsa. (a secret recipe, given to them as a gift. a spy version of martha stewart would be very jealous. actually, just the real life version would be. i mean, i'm pretty sure martha stewart is jealous of the taylor's salsa recipe.)
-Ended the day by: watching the proposal. (see a movie watching monday funday trend evolving here?) it was cutsey. i felt like they didn't show the process of the two falling in love well. the hated each other then, WHAM, they loved each other. it was fun and made me giggly at points, but it won't be winning an oscar. (not that winning an oscar was their goal.)

rugtastic.

I've been searching for a rug for the living room for quite some time now. Man oh man, rugs can get expensive. Whew. I've walked away from a few that were in my price range because they weren't quite what I was looking for. In most cases I would rather save a little longer, than settle for something that I will just be disappointed with a short time later. Ya know?

On a whim, I decided to check out the rug department at Lowes. Guess what? I found exactly what I wanted right away and it was on clearance for only 80 bones. Not too shabby compared to other prices I've seen. Just for kicks I started browsing the other rugs available. Then suddenly, a light shone down from heaven, and I heard a children's choir start sing. There it was. A rug that looked almost exactly the same as the "perfect" one for a mere $20. Ohhh snap. So, I drug the $20 rug over to compare it side by side to the $80 rug. Nope. It wasn't a dream. They were very simliar. The main difference was that the $80 rug was a bit softer. But to save $60 I could just wear socks if I wanted the same feel.

I wanted a neutral colored rug. That way, if I wanted pops of color, I could just change out the couch pillows and curtains and such, without having to hunt for another rug. I also wanted it to have a texture. Originally I was on the hunt for a jute rug, but this one works just fine.

note: It's a good thing I only paid $20 for it. Lula (our youngest pup) decided to "christen" it the day after we got it. Phooey, Lula, phooey.

(the day before) yesterday.

Event: monday funday.
Mood: slightly motivated.

--

-Stepped out of bed.: late. :)
-Breakfast/Lunch: bean dip and santitos. Try as I might, I just can't post regularly. It's not so much a lack of time, but a lack of discipline. My lovely friend Lanie Beth just did an "update" post, and by golly, I liked the idea. So here I go stealing her idea. Here's a run down of what's been going on in my life.

a) A good chunk of my time has been spent on the set of The Vampire Diaries. My "job" is acting natural as an extra. Sounds pretty easy, but pantomiming with a stranger can prove to be awkward. Extremely awkward. The pay is only so-so, but it's pretty interesting seeing how the show is made. Seriously, the time and effort that goes into a 30 second clip is astounding. Well, it's interesting when the extras actually get used. Patience is undoubtedly a virtue, because there is a whole. lot. of. waiting. Yesterday my call time was at 4pm, and we didn't leave till 3am. Out of the 11 hours we were there we were actually working maybe 4 or 5 of them. Oh, and then there's the egos. The GIANT egos. Sweet mother of pearl. But, that's a whole different post.

b) I joined the Henry County Special Olympics tennis team. I've only been to one practice, but I can tell it'll be fantastic. I've been wanting to do some volunteer work for a while, so when this opportunity came up I jumped at. The first weekend in November is the first tournament. I'm sure there will be some fun pictures to follow.

c) The living room "redo" project is still in progress. Since, I'll have a little cash flow from (a), it should move things along a little bit. And that makes me excited.

d) I've made one necklace since my last batch. Sad, huh? I just haven't had any creative juice in my blood lately. I really feel leery about making stuff "just because". Because then I won't be excited about putting them in the shop. Then if somebody buys one, I'll feel like I've gypped them. Maybe heading to the antique market will "inspire" me.

e) I didn't post about this weeks Monday Funday. But, I've got to be honest, not much happened. We ate waffles in bed and watched Macgyver. It was pretty magical and the highlight of the day. Then we went shopping, without buying anything. Then dinner at the misters favorite Mexican restaurant. (See...Macgyver and waffles was the high point.)

So there you have it. A "catch up" post.

finally.

Welp. Here it is. (finally.) The before and after pictures of our fireplace. And let me tell you, I am loving it. While I am no professional photographer you can really tell it wakes the place up.

To me, painting the fireplace was less work than getting the trim and walls painted.
Here are the steps I took:

1) Clean the brick. (I used a simple soap and water mixture.)
2) Clean and sand the mantle.
3) Prime everything. (A roller did the trick, along with a small paint brush for nooks.)
4) Paint. (I chose a semi-gloss for the brick, Muslin White by Glidden to be exact. Then I used a sightly brighter white for the mantle to make it pop a bit.)
5) Step back and revel in all your new fireplace glory. (A happy dance is optional but recommended.)

If you are on the fence about painting the brick in your house, I say go for it. I'm super happy I did.

As for the rest of the living room, it is finally painted. The trim was a beast, but I prevailed. I plan on posting pictures of the rest of the room as I get it together. It has a long way to go yet. We still need tons of stuff to finish it up. Ex: a club chair, bookcases, a tv stand, side table, "pretties", etc. Yard sales and thrift shops will be seeing a lot of me, that's for sure. I hope they like me.

Yesterday.

I know living in the past can be bad, awful even, but I am going to start doing so on Tuesdays. (if you don't mind.) I thought I might let you guys in on what goes down on Monday Funday each Tueaday. Some weeks it may not be much, but humor me.

Most Monday Fundays begin with Joel waking up before me and making breakfast. It's my favorite part of the day really and I'm of so thankful for it. I hope he doesn't mind it too much. Yesterday, on top of his regular fantastic breakfast, he did the dishes AND reorganized a cabinet. Nice! Such a sweet man. And on a dreary day too. Double nice.

After a slow start (which all Monday Fundays have) we decided to go check out The Invention of Lying. Insert wacky picture of us here:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 310px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_wsH9t1Z2B4E/StUVTtfMvQI/AAAAAAAAAQQ/gCrAmV95ybI/s400/IMG_0462%5B1%5D.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392239557218188546" />

We decided we would give it 6.5 out of 10 stars. It was what some would call "cute". The story line was great with a interesting spin on things. The bluntness involved in a world where lying isn't invented takes you a bit off guard at first, but it certainly is realistic. Ricky Gervais is a favorite of ours and once again he did great. He has a serious turn in this movie that brought me to tears. (yes, I cry at most anything, but that is neither here nor there.) The humor was right up our alley. (Side note: Tina Fey has a cameo.)

But! I know this isn't a movie review blog. Go see it. I think you might like it.

After the movie we headed home and did brain teasers, then watched iCarly. Wild, I know. But, I feel like my mind is more agile and I can relate to pre-teens better. Worth it.

wallpaper.

I love a good desktop wallpaper. The mister and I make it a point to keep our schedules open for the day so we can spend some time together. When the week gets a bit crazy knowing Monday will be relaxed is awesome. Fantastic really.

Well, today is a massively lazy Monday Funday. Complete with comfy pj's and moving our one TV to the bedroom. Yup, we've been in bed for most of the day. Sure, there is tons we both could do. But, I wouldn't change today one bit. Well, maybe more ice cream would be involved.

No, this isn't the most interesting post, but it's life. A "treasure" the mister brought with him when he moved in. Please note: he doesn't even play the drums. But, for whatever reason he had it, I decided to try and give it a bit of TLC. After some spray paint, duct tape, batting, and vintage fabric, I'm kinda digging the way it turned out.

(Apologies are in order for stinky photography.)

Also, after braving the ATL flood, we finally got our new couch. We opted for this tuxedo style sofa from Ikea:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_wsH9t1Z2B4E/SrvKlobRNcI/AAAAAAAAAQI/k0_H29J0K3M/s400/68200_PE182352_S3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385120527307322818" />
I figure this style will be easy to mix with a bit of vintage style and a bit of modern. And the price tag was something we could swallow.

As for the living room "make over", things are steadily coming together. The fireplace is painted white. (I love love love it.) The once dark stained trim is painted white. And today I'm going to prime the walls, so I can paint them...white. I know it's a lot of white, tons really, but we wanted a super clean feeling. I'm hoping to bring in warmth with picture frames, the coffee table, and textiles. Picture will be up soon. I promise.

jackpot!

I won a blog contest and I am elated. Guilty.

Well, I won an 8x10 print of this dreamy photo.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wsH9t1Z2B4E/SrrxoiT4e1I/AAAAAAAAAQA/WcD2c53V3JI/s400/flower.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384881983182109522" />

So a big thank you to Lori Dunbar. She had fallen in love instantly, and so did I. Head over heels.

So you too, must check it out. The shop is called Sadie Olive. Within it you can find everything from vintage books to lovely kitchen wares. An fantastic eclectic mix of unique finds. The gal behind it all, Sara Duckett, is graphic designer, boutique owner, and photographer. (A mix that makes for smitten shoppers.)

Better check out her website as well. Merry Monday.

Ok, I know, I know. It's a bit early to really be thinking about the holidays, right? I mean, for those of us on this side of the hemisphere, fall hasn't even officially started yet. But maybe, just maybe, we can all be a bit proactive this year! I know a good deal will make most of us get off our rear and get things done. Enter The Chalkboard Tee folks stage right.

I blogged about The Chalkboard Tee back in June after visiting their booth at the Indie Craft Experience. The idea - genius. I already posted the video once but, just for kicks & the mad beat, here it is again.

Super fun huh? Well, they are giving 20% off of holiday pre-orders to Yes You Maigh readers. Dandy! All holiday pre-orders will be shipped out December 10th. So yes, you will have to wait a bit. But, by then you may have forgotten you've ordered it and it will be a great exciting surprise. Or you can just have it sent to the recipient (if it isn't for yourself). Botta Bing. Botta Boom. One (or more) less person you won't have to shop for later. Yesss.

Pick your favorite design. (Mine is the apple.) Pick your size. (Munchkin size is available.) Enter the code "yes you maigh" at checkout. (Save money.) Be happy in your heart.

There will be a banner in the right side bar until 12/1/09. Just in case you decide you want to take advantage of this offer later. (i.e. - procrastinators.) So don't you fret.
